Rapper Soulja Boy has expressed interest in buying TikTok following the signing of a bill by President Joe Biden that could lead to a ban in the U.S.
As per the provisions outlined in the new bill, TikTok’s current owner, ByteDance, would be required to divest its controlling share in the company to ensure TikTok’s continued legal authorization for domestic usage.
Concerns over national security have been raised by government officials and other stakeholders, attributing it to TikTok’s ownership ties with China, which has become an escalating concern in recent times.
Taking to his X platform, he criticised the decision and eventually said he might buy the Chinese-owned social media platform.
“I can’t believe y’all just gon let them ban TikTok like that. And yall think it’s funny. If they do it to this app they can do it to any app or site. Not cool fr yall will see later.
In a separate post, he jokingly asked, “How much yall want for TikTok? I’ll buy it. @tiktok_us.”
According to CNBC’s report, President Biden has officially signed the bill into law, which grants ByteDance a period of 9 months to divest TikTok if they wish to continue operating in the United States.
Initially, the bill was passed solely in the House, but it was later combined with foreign aid for several U.S. allies, including Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.
Originally, the House intended to provide ByteDance with only a six-month timeframe to divest TikTok.
The CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, called it a “disappointing moment” for TikTok, but the company plans to fight the bill. “Rest assured, we aren’t going anywhere,” he continued.
“We are confident and we will keep fighting for your rights in the courts. The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again.”
