In a heartfelt address during a birthday celebration for Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah on October 10, Dr Kweku Oteng, the Founder and President of Angel Broadcasting Network, shared candid advice about the challenges of journalism, particularly in politically sensitive topics like galamsey.
His comments served as both a commendation for Afrifa’s commitment to the cause and a reminder of the complexities involved in navigating the media landscape.
“You (Okatakyie) can be a witness that sometimes when I advise you on certain issues, you don’t listen to me,” Dr. Oteng remarked, acknowledging the passion and dedication Afrifa brings to his work.
Dr. Oteng continued, “I understand the nature of your work, but sometimes you have to tone down a bit. I know how committed you are to fighting this galamsey issue, and it is a good thing. But sometimes when it gets to a point where these politicians are attacking me, relax a bit.”
The discussion touched on the sensitivity surrounding the galamsey menace, an issue that has attracted significant political attention and controversy in Ghana.

“Journalists are sometimes stubborn,” he noted, acknowledging that a fierce commitment to the truth can lead to tensions between the media and political entities.
Moreover, Dr. Oteng expressed concern over the misconceptions some political parties hold regarding the influence of the media on public opinion.
“What worries me a lot is sometimes these political parties think we influence the shows and the work you do. So, I normally get attacks from them. But we all know the work you are doing is to help the nation and not for personal interest,” he asserted.
