Sugarcane hitmaker Camidoh has ignited significant controversy following his recent interview on Joy Prime, where he attempted to defend the act of smoking.

In what appears to be a robust justification for smoking, the singer, recognized as the only Ghanaian artist with the highest number of views on YouTube, suggested that smoking may not inherently be harmful.

He expressed the view that not everything labelled as negative should be considered detrimental.

When pressed for a clear stance on the health implications of smoking, he remarked, “If it’s bad for you, it is bad for you. The doctors have to detect that.”

He continued, “Generally, they say we shouldn’t smoke because it’s bad for our lungs. How about our parents who have been cooking kenkey? You see them when they are making kenkey, you see how smoky it gets?

I just want to tell you, you don’t have to dwell on that…It is not bad in my eyes because I’m telling a story,” he said.

As mentioned earlier, Camidoh’s song, Sugarcane is the most viewed Ghanaian song on YouTube.

The original version of the song has garnered nearly 8 million views, while the remix featuring Mayorkun, King Promise, and Darkoo has amassed over 97 million views.

This remarkable achievement has pushed Sarkodie’s Adonai into second place. What makes Camidoh’s feat even more impressive is that Sugarcane was released in 2022, while Adonai was uploaded 9 years ago on YouTube.

Currently, the Sugarcane remix has over 97,898,985 views, surpassing Adonai’s 97,519,515 views.

Furthermore, Sugarcane made history a few days ago by topping the Nigerian Apple Music Hot 100 chart for a significant period.

Camidoh’s rapid rise to the top spot on YouTube showcases the global appeal of his music and the increasing influence of Ghanaian artists on the international stage.

Sugarcane is Camidoh’s biggest as it gained immense popularity after being featured in videos by Ghanaian TikTok creators, leading to a surge in online promotion.
