In a recent interview, Brother Sammy made a controversial statement about women and their use of scarves.
He suggested that keeping a scarf on for too long could negatively affect a woman’s hair, leading to unpleasant odours that might make her less desirable.
“The scarf will leave your hair smelling so bad that no man will want you. I am not saying don’t wear a scarf, but you can do that when praying,” Brother Sammy said, implying that it’s fine for women to wear scarves during prayer but they should remove them afterwards.
“When you are done you can remove it so that air passes through your hair as a Christian woman. If you keep your scarf on and your hair smells, no one will want you around them,” he added, as quoted by MyNewsGH.
He further claimed that this might be a contributing factor to the delay in marriage for deeply religious women, suggesting that their habits may inadvertently make them less attractive to potential partners.
A scarf covering the hair for extended periods can trap moisture and sweat, especially in hot or humid conditions.
This lack of ventilation can create an environment where bacteria thrive, potentially causing an unpleasant smell.
Covering hair continuously without allowing it to dry or “breathe” may worsen the odour, contributing to scalp issues.
In contexts like Brother Sammy’s comments, the issue is more cultural and symbolic, emphasizing how personal grooming and social perceptions may influence relationships.
