The late Mary Naa Amanua Dodoo, affectionately known as Naa Amanua, was more than just a singer; she was the voice of a generation that celebrated the heart and soul of Ga culture.

As the lead female vocalist of the legendary Wulomei band, her melodic prowess bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, breathing life into Ga folk music and earning her a revered spot in Ghana’s music history.

Her songs, deeply rooted in culture, not only entertained but also educated, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural tapestry.

In the wake of her passing, many have sought ways to honour her legacy, but none as passionately as Ghanaian musician and songwriter Epixode. During his performance at the Bhim Festival, Epixode took a moment to pay tribute to the late icon, suggesting that a statue be erected in her memory.

“Naa Amanua is one of the greatest musical icons Ghana has ever had,” he said in an interview with JoyNews. “Her influence goes beyond music; she championed the identity of the Ga people, and as someone from the Ga community, I feel a deep responsibility to celebrate her.”

Epixode, known for his ability to merge reggae and dancehall with traditional rhythms, shared how Naa Amanua’s artistry inspired him.

Her commitment to preserving culture through music resonated deeply with his own artistic journey. “As an artist, I owe so much of my style and identity to pioneers like her. A statue in her honor would not only preserve her legacy but also remind us of the cultural wealth she left behind,” he added.

The Bhim Festival was also a milestone for Epixode on a personal level. For the first time, he performed with his biological brother, a guitarist who flew in from abroad to join him on stage. Their collaboration added a layer of familial pride to the event.

“Sharing the stage with my brother was a dream come true. It was magical, and I hope this is the first of many performances together,” he said, visibly elated.
