Ghanaian Kumawood actor Big Akwes has shared a deeply emotional account of his struggle with illness and the unfortunate aftermath of seeking help, which has left a lasting impact on how he views assistance from others.
Speaking during an interview on Okukuseku the Talk Show with Emelia Brobbey, the actor recounted an experience that shook him to his core and altered his outlook on receiving help in times of need.
According to Big Akwes, the incident happened when he was seriously ill and financially unstable while in Kumasi.
A young man and a group of concerned individuals visited him, determined to assist. Among them was a man named Packer, who insisted on taking him to the hospital immediately despite resistance from others.

“Packer didn’t want to wait till the next day. He made sure I was taken to the hospital that very day and stayed by my side, taking care of me for a week,” Big Akwes recounted.
However, his story took a distressing turn when a woman who later stepped in to purchase medication for him began to claim credit for saving his life. He revealed that after his recovery, she started spreading claims that if not for her intervention, he would not be alive today.
“She started tarnishing my image, saying that if not for her, I would be dead by now. I confronted her about it, and when I asked if she wanted the money she spent on me, she said no. That’s when I truly regretted accepting her help,” he lamented.
The actor admitted that the public humiliation and emotional toll from the woman’s actions made him question the sincerity of help in general.
He described how deeply hurt he was by the incident, reflecting on how such gestures of kindness could come with strings attached.
“I regret accepting her help. If I had to go through such a situation again, I’d rather die in peace than let someone rescue me just to later tarnish my name. What’s the point of helping someone if it only leads to this?”
