Seun Kuti, the son of Fela Kuti, has expressed his frustration over the media’s tendency to attribute all his accomplishments to Burna Boy.
In his words, the music industry’s achievements, including his own, have been wrongly credited to Burna Boy. To illustrate his point, he highlighted an instance where Burna Boy was falsely reported as the first artist to perform at Coachella in 2020, when in fact Seun had already performed at the festival back in 2012.
Seun, a Grammy-nominated artist, also discussed how Burna Boy received his first Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album, a category in which his older brother, Femi Kuti, had already received multiple nominations.
In a recent interview with The Public Republic, Seun Kuti further revealed that his album ‘Black Times’ had been nominated for Best World Music Album years ago, but no African award organizers considered it for a nomination.
Despite earning another Grammy nomination for his contributions to Janelle Monae’s ‘Age of Pleasure,’ which was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2024 Grammys, Seun expressed disappointment that the media did not mention him among the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammys.
Seun Kuti said; “My brother [Femi Kuti] has been nominated at the Grammys multiple times. They’ve nominated me, I was also nominated in the last edition. It was only my name that they [Nigerian media] didn’t mention among the Nigerian artistes who were nominated for the 66th Grammys.
That’s what they do every time as if I’m from Togo. That’s how they said Burna boy was the first Nigerian artiste to play in Coachella in 2020 where me I’ve played in 2012 as if I’m from Togo”.
