In the wake of John Dramani Mahama’s swearing-in as the President of Ghana on January 7, 2025, reggae musician Samini took to social media to offer his heartfelt congratulations.
The veteran reggae and dancehall artiste shared a post celebrating the country’s democracy and wishing the newly sworn-in president success.
He emphasized how Mahama’s success in office could lead to a prosperous future for all Ghanaians, stating, “Congratulations @JDMahama. Ghana has won once again by demonstrating our democracy to the world. I wish you the best of success in your tenure as president of the Republic of Ghana.
“Your success in office means success for every hopeful Ghanaian who is looking for a better and more stable economy for businesses and communities to thrive. Please don’t let us down. WELCOME BACK TO THE OFFICE SIR. Work time.”

The message, though positive and well-meaning on the surface, has not been without controversy. A vocal supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the lead-up to the 2024 elections, Samini has been accused by some social media users of hypocrisy.
Many questioned the sudden shift in his political allegiance, pointing out his vocal support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was Mahama’s opponent in the highly contested race.
Some critics were quick to point out the irony in Samini’s congratulatory message, given his previous political stance.
“How can you be rooting for Bawumia just last year, and now you’re calling Mahama ‘Sir’?” one user wrote. Another added, “I don’t understand how someone can flip just like that. Where’s your loyalty?”
