Ghana’s political landscape is no stranger to heated debates, but when chaos ensued during the vetting of President Mahama’s incoming ministers, it took an unexpected turn—resulting in the suspension of South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

The fallout from this event has sparked conversations about parliamentary discipline, but it has also revealed the unwavering solidarity within the Minority Caucus, with Ningo-Prampram MP Samuel Nartey George publicly standing by his embattled colleague.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Sam George expressed his support for Dafeamekpor, painting him as a dedicated leader and a warrior for his constituents.

“My dear Brother,

I stand with you in this moment of unfortunate adversity. You are a victim of your kind heart and humanity. You are a bulwark for our Caucus, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with you.

To the people of South Dayi, you gave us a warrior, a leader, an advocate, and a brother’s brother. Protect him for us. This storm too shall pass!

I am with you, @etsedafeamekpor.”

Background

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin suspended Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, due to his involvement in a disruptive incident during a recent Appointments Committee session.

The session, intended for the vetting of ministerial nominees, descended into chaos, leading to physical confrontations among committee members. This disorder not only disrupted the proceedings but also resulted in damage to parliamentary property, including broken tables and microphones.

In response to what he described as an embarrassment to the institution of Parliament, Speaker Bagbin took decisive action by suspending Dafeamekpor along with three other MPs: Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli (Gushegu), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (Weija-Gbawe).

The suspension is set for two weeks, during which these MPs are barred from participating in parliamentary proceedings.

Additionally, the Speaker has established a seven-member committee to investigate the incident further, emphasizing that any member found culpable shall face appropriate disciplinary measures.
