Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy has shared insightful thoughts on the path to Grammy recognition, mentorship from industry legends like Rocky Dawuni, and his broader aspirations for international music success.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, Stonebwoy revealed his perspective on the Grammy nomination process and why he doesn’t tailor his music specifically for such awards.

Stonebwoy discussed his interest in learning from Grammy-nominated artist Rocky Dawuni, noting that while he hasn’t directly sought advice from him, he has overheard a conversation that piqued his interest.
“I haven’t spoken to Rocky Dawuni about how he does it because it didn’t cross my mind. But I think I should,” Stonebwoy admitted.
“I overheard a conversation between him and King Promise, where Promise asked him how he does it. I was interested in the topic, but Rocky said there’s no specific code for it. I’ve actually been speaking more with his manager, his wife, than with him directly.”
While Stonebwoy acknowledged the influence of such established figures, he emphasized the importance of mentorship and guidance rather than relying on shortcuts.
“I think it would be professional to ask him because he’s a legend in the game and has been nominated four times. He can offer guidance that could bring you closer to where you want to be, but I don’t think he can tell you who the next nominee will be. He can only serve as a guide,” Stonebwoy stated.

Further reflecting on the Grammy process, Stonebwoy explained that the prestigious award isn’t solely about popularity, and there is no specific formula for receiving a nomination. “The Grammy itself is not like a typical public award.
“Even when the CEO of the Grammys visited Ghana, he spoke about how it’s not just about how popular your music is. Anyone can get a nomination—it’s not just for the high and mighty,” he said.
Addressing his approach to creating music, Stonebwoy made it clear that his focus is not on tailoring his work for award nominations.
“I didn’t tailor this album specifically for the Grammys. If I had, I would say so. I made it for the world, so that people can enjoy it. If it qualifies for nomination anywhere in the world, then it’s at that level where it can fit into any category.”
His ultimate goal is clear—Stonebwoy aims for global reach and exposure. “My whole goal is to have my songs played worldwide and to tour the world.
“That takes more work than just being nominated for a Grammy. Many people have received Grammy awards but aren’t doing well in terms of international exposure. My main focus is for my music to reach the world.”
