Veteran media personality and comedian Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) has reignited the long-standing debate over the name of Ghana’s main international airport.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, KSM urged President John Dramani Mahama to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA) after Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president and a key figure in the Pan-African movement.
“I hear people are blundering around that they should rename the airport Kwame Nkrumah International Airport. I stand by that,” KSM stated emphatically.
“When a person like this leads a country and an airport is built, or they want to name the airport, do you name the airport after the clown who took money from the CIA to overthrow Kwame Nkrumah? Isn’t it a disgrace?”
His comments reflect a broader conversation that has persisted for decades regarding whether Ghana’s most significant airport should continue to bear the name of General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, one of the military officers involved in the 1966 coup that ousted Nkrumah.

Critics argue that Kotoka’s legacy is tied to the disruption of Ghana’s progress and the Pan-African movement, while others believe the name is historically significant.
KSM further questioned Kotoka’s contributions to Ghana’s development, arguing that his impact did not warrant such national recognition.
“What value does Kotoka have in the scheme of national events? He was one of the commanders of some battalion and something like that.
“But what was his impact before then? I do not think that the national airport should be named after somebody who basically disrupted the Pan-African movement and left Kwame Nkrumah in exile,” he said.
Defenders of the airport’s current name often point out that Kotoka was killed at the location where the airport stands today, making it a historical landmark.
However, KSM dismissed this reasoning, asserting that naming national monuments should be based on substantial contributions to the country’s progress.
“Somebody came to explain that the airport is where Kotoka lost his life. So that was a landmark where he died. But naming the airport was not because he had done anything magnificent for this country,” he noted.
He concluded by reiterating that significant institutions should be named after individuals who have left a lasting, positive impact on Ghana, making a strong case for the airport to be renamed.
“We name a person and after something substantial. And I don’t think that anybody deserves the name,” he added.
