Remy Ma has brought attention to her infamous 2007 shooting incident in a creative way on the song ‘Outta Control’ by Fat Joe and Cool & Dre.
The new lyrics have sparked mixed reactions, with some feeling that she has not expressed enough remorse for the harm caused to her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph during the altercation.
“They say I shot my friend over a band, and?/ Imagine what I’ll do to a bi**h I can’t stand,” Ma rhymed.
Remy served six years of her eight-year sentence at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women after shooting Barnes-Joseph following a birthday celebration in New York.
The incident occurred during an altercation over missing money from her purse, resulting in Barnes-Joseph being shot twice in the stomach.
Remy was released from prison on August 1, 2014. A year later, the “Conceited” MC shared her reflections on her time in prison and celebrated her freedom on Instagram.
“At this moment 1 year ago I was sitting in a cell wondering when I was coming home,” she captioned an Instagram post at the time. “I had actually gave up hoping that it would even happen. I was supposed to be released July 31, 2014 & I had woke up on August 1, 2014 STILL in prison; I was devastated. Yet, by the grace of my merciful God, I was able to awake the next day at home, in my bed, and post my 1st selfie. At this moment I was so happy but still in shock that I was actually ‘free’.”
In another post, she wrote, “Here it is, exactly 1 year later and it feels great to say #ImAround. Thank you to everyone who supported me and helped make my transition back into society a warm, inviting, & loving feeling [kiss emoji] I am truly thankful.”
