Rema’s hit single Calm Down has further established him as one of the top artists in the Afrobeats genre as the song has now become the most-streamed Afrobeats track in the United States.
Having garnered over one billion on-demand streams in the US, Rema’s achievement has been officially recognized by Chart Data, a music monitoring platform, on X.
Last year, Chart Data already hailed Calm Down as the most successful African song of all time.
Experts at Billboard magazine attribute the song’s success to its unique combination of a sad slow jam with a subtle hypnotic allure, making it a tune that resonates with listeners and prompts repeated plays.
Originally released in February 2022 as a single from Rema’s debut album, Rave and Roses, Calm Down received a significant boost when a remix featuring American singer Selena Gomez was released a few months later. This remix also achieved remarkable success, reaching the billion-plays milestone on Spotify.
The song made history by becoming the first African track to spend a year on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching a peak position of number three.
This accomplishment solidified Calm Down as the highest-charting song with an Afrobeats artist as the lead. Additionally, the remix has garnered nearly 894 million views on YouTube, making it the most-watched music video by a Nigerian artist.
Rema has risen to prominence alongside other renowned Nigerian Afrobeats artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido. He describes his unique style of Afrobeats as “Afrorave,” which reflects his distinct musical identity.
