The Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has emphasized the pervasive impact of corruption on Ghanaian society, noting that it extends beyond politicians and individuals in high-ranking positions.
She recounted an incident where a woman sought her assistance and admitted to owing money to MTN Quickloan. The woman explained that she was unable to repay the debt due to financial constraints.
Despite intending to aid the woman, Addo-Danquah found herself inadvertently repaying a loan on the woman’s behalf instead of covering her school fees. The woman advised the Addo Danquah not to send the money to her number but rather to a different number.
Clearly, the lady had consciously chosen not to settle her debt and had pleaded with her to refrain from transferring the money she intended to assist her with via MoMo (mobile money).
In light of this incident, Addo-Danquah highlights the need to address corruption at all levels of society, as it has eroded the moral fabric of Ghanaian society.
“I am concerned, everybody should be concerned. What do we have to do? We must all put our hands together and we must fight whatever is fighting us. That is what I can say. The point is that, as the OSP said, if we need to fight it, then everybody must fight. I have somebody who asked me for support to pay school fees or something”, she said.
“Then the moment I said I could help, she called me back to say that I should not put it on her MoMo because she owes MTN, can you imagine? And I did. So, these are small things that we think they don’t matter, but they do. It starts from small-small things and becomes big,” she added.
She has therefore advised Ghanaians to change their attitude and put hands together to fight corruption if they wish for a better Ghana.
“So, everybody must have a change of attitude, mindset, that this is where we are and this is where we want to go. And we must all play a role in the fight against corruption. One person cannot do it. And it’s not about leadership. It’s about everybody playing a role. Whatever is expected of you, you do it, whatever is expected of me, I do it. Whatever is expected of institutions, they do it,” she said.
