During a recent appearance on the Loud Lounge podcast hosted by DJ Slim, Ghanaian rapper and producer EL shared his insights on the top lyricists in Ghana.

The interview, which was monitored by GhanaStreetJournal, featured EL highlighting several Ghanaian rappers who exemplify exceptional lyricism in the current generation and are actively pursuing their craft.

Before revealing his selections, EL clarified that lyricism is distinct from mere rapping or rhyming, noting that while anyone can rap, true lyricism requires depth and substance.

With that distinction made, he listed his top choices; Kojo Cue, King Tradey, Kev the Topic, M.anifest, Omar Sterling, formerly known as Paedae, and Obibini.

“Let me list five of my most respected lyricists, not rappers. This is because anybody can rap. Rap is just putting words together, making them rhyme, and making them work, and that is rap.

“People might love that, but when it comes to lyricism, it is a different conversation; it is an art. These are songs you have to listen to a couple of times to get the message. Sometimes you get the meaning of one line, wait, and then unconsciously get the meaning of the next line another time,” EL told DJ Slim.

In the realm of rap, lyricism is characterized by the artistic expression and innovative use of language within hip-hop music.

Mastery of this skill is a defining feature of renowned rappers, as their adept manipulation of language and delivery enhances the genre beyond simple rhythmic patterns.

Lyricism empowers rappers to express intricate emotions, concepts, and viewpoints through the art of hip-hop.

Similarly, EL was interviewed on Hitz FM where he shared his top five Ghanaian rappers. He mentioned Sarkodie, M.anifest, Worlasi, and Kojo Cue, and concluded with the rising BET nominee, Kwesi Arthur.

“I know sey people go worry me for the last one but I for talk am. I don’t mind about him doing many commercial songs but it’s something he has,” he said when mentioning Kwesi Arthur’s name.
