Rapper Obibini strongly asserts that despite the dominance of Afrobeats and other genres in the entertainment industry, rap music in Ghana, specifically Hiplife, will not diminish.
According to Obibini, it is impossible to compile a list of the top ten artists without including at least one rapper, a statement that has sparked reactions within the entertainment in Ghana sphere.
Recognizing that Hiplife has been present in Ghana for 30 years since its introduction, as mentioned by Reggie Rockstone during his performance at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), Obibini believes that it requires effective packaging to ensure its longevity. These statements were made during his interview on Property FM.
He stated “Rap can never fade here in Ghana because if you like you can list the top 10 artistes in the country and you’ll comfortably see that you’ll have about five or more rappers in the list.
“And this is factual so rap is there for us so shout out to the pioneers like Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour, and others who started it and we still continue to do it today,” he responded
“Recently I heard that Hiplife is 30 years old so if rap will die or fade away in Ghana I believe it would have been a long time ago and so rap can never die.
Adding, “When you take Highlife away from Ghanaian music, I think kasahari or rap is the next so there’s still a market for Hip Hop but we just have to package it well”.
Hiplife is a Ghanaian musical style that fuses Ghanaian culture and hip hop. Recorded predominantly in the Ghanaian Akan language, hiplife is rapidly gaining popularity in the 2010s throughout West Africa and abroad, especially in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Germany.
