Ghanaian musician and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, Sister Derby, continues to challenge societal norms.
During a bold conversation on MX24 TV, she flipped the script on the long-standing myths surrounding queer individuals, urging Ghanaians to look beyond their biases and recognize the undeniable contributions queer people have made throughout history.
“Since the beginning of time, there has never been an issue with queer people. We all know queer people in our communities.

“We have popular people who are queer,” Sister Derby began, setting the tone for a conversation that would question everything we thought we knew about the LGBTQ+ community.
For the outspoken musician, queer identities have always been part of the human experience, quietly interwoven into society, and often hidden in plain sight.
But as much as queer people have been a part of the fabric of every community, their talents and influence have often been overlooked, says Derby.
She pointed to the power of the digital age and how platforms like TikTok have revolutionized the way we view entertainment.
“If you look at the top people reigning on TikTok now, they are mostly queer or feminine or into feminine stuff like that. We love the entertainment; we love their creativity; they are talented,” she emphasized.
