Pope Francis has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after experiencing complications from bronchitis, the Vatican has confirmed.
The 88-year-old Pontiff, who has faced various health challenges in recent years, is currently receiving medical treatment and remains in stable condition.
A Vatican spokesperson assured the public, stating, “The Holy Father has been hospitalized for a respiratory infection and is receiving the necessary medical care. His condition is stable, and he is responding well to treatment.”
Despite the hospitalization, Pope Francis is said to be in good spirits. Reports indicate that he has been eating and reading newspapers, suggesting that his condition is not critical.
However, doctors have advised continued hospitalization for close monitoring, leading to the cancellation of several scheduled papal engagements.
Among them is a highly anticipated Jubilee Audience and a Mass for the Jubilee of Artists and the World of Culture, with Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça set to preside over the latter in the Pope’s absence.
The Vatican has not provided a specific timeline for his discharge, stating only that he will remain under medical supervision for as long as necessary.
This latest health concern follows a series of medical challenges for the Pontiff, including a respiratory infection in March 2023 and abdominal surgery for a hernia later that year.
Despite these setbacks, he has remained active, frequently traveling and addressing global issues. As the world watches and prays for his recovery, Vatican officials remain hopeful that Pope Francis will soon be well enough to resume his duties.
