President of IMANI-Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticized the persistent political interference in Ghana’s governance system, arguing that it stifles the ability of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and key sectors like energy to function effectively.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, he stated, “The way we handle governance in this country is ridiculous. Every time there is a new government, someone pushes their pet project, and this is destroying the country.”
Cudjoe emphasized that the widespread belief that simply changing management leads to better performance is fundamentally flawed.

According to him, the real issue is the lack of independence for those appointed to lead SOEs and critical government agencies. “Among all the State-Owned Enterprises, I’m yet to see one that has significantly improved simply because management was changed,” he noted.
He pointed out that successive governments have failed to allow institutions to operate autonomously, as political control often takes precedence over competence and efficiency.
This, he argued, is why state enterprises continue to underperform despite frequent leadership reshuffles.
Cudjoe further stressed the need for private sector participation in the energy sector as a means of minimizing government interference.
However, he cautioned against rushing into reforms without assessing past policies, saying, “We should not start from scratch but rather analyse the PDS data and compare it to our current state before making any decisions.”
