The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the vandalism of a statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital Roundabout in Sekondi, Western Region.
The incident has drawn significant attention, sparking conversations about respect for public property and the motivations behind such acts.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 16, 2024, the police outlined the extent of the damage. “Preliminary investigations by the police have revealed that the statue’s left leg has been damaged, and its plaque removed.
Police efforts are underway to get the perpetrators arrested to face justice,” the statement read.
The vandalized statue, which was unveiled earlier this year, has been a source of controversy since its installation. Critics questioned the timing and purpose of the statue, accusing the president of self-aggrandizement.

Some argued that the resources could have been better used to address pressing challenges in the healthcare sector.
However, supporters defended it as a symbol of progress, highlighting the president’s contributions to infrastructure development in the Western Region, including the rehabilitation of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
Reacting to the news, residents and stakeholders expressed mixed emotions. “It’s shocking to see such disrespect for public property,” said Kwesi Mensah, a local businessman. “No matter how people feel about the president or the statue, this kind of behaviour is unacceptable.”
Others, however, hinted that the vandalism might reflect deeper public frustrations. “This is what happens when people feel unheard. It’s not the right way, but maybe it’s a statement,” remarked a Sekondi resident who wished to remain anonymous.
