In recent years, the rise of Afrobeats has transformed the music scene across West Africa, with Nigeria at the forefront of this genre’s global popularity.
However, this phenomenon has led to some confusion regarding the origins of artists within the genre. Ghanaian singer Joel Ofori Bonsu, known as OliveTheBoy, recently addressed this issue, explaining why many people mistakenly identify him as Nigerian.

In an interview with Okay FM on November 5, 2024, OliveTheBoy shared his thoughts on the pervasive misconception surrounding his identity.
He noted that the immense influence of Nigerian artists in popularizing the Afrobeats sound has created a perception that any artist associated with this genre must be Nigerian. “People are actually embracing who I am, and it’s Afrobeat,” he remarked.
“I believe the reason many think that anyone performing a particular rhythm is an Afrobeat artist is that Nigerians have established the genre to such a degree that when you hear a sound, it feels inherently Nigerian.”
During the interview, host Abeiku Santana highlighted the differences between Ghanaian and Nigerian Pidgin English, emphasizing that the two dialects sound distinct from one another.

OliveTheBoy responded by acknowledging the nuances in language, suggesting that when artists use their own version of Pidgin, it can easily be mistaken for the Nigerian variant.
