A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced Pastor Hammond Love aka Pastor Love, the ex-husband of gospel musician Obaapa Christy, to 48 months in prison following his conviction for theft.
Despite pleading not guilty to stealing a 2013 Toyota Highlander, the court found him guilty after a lengthy trial that lasted seven years. The presiding judge, His Honour Isaac Addo, also imposed a sentence that included hard labour.
The case revolves around a complaint filed by Samuel Amankwah, a businessman residing in the United States.
In 2016, Amankwah imported a 2013 Toyota Highlander, which he entrusted to Pastor Love for clearance. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Maxwell Frimpong, Pastor Love used his own funds to facilitate the vehicle’s clearance.
Initially, Amankwah instructed Pastor Love to sell the vehicle for $50,000 and deduct the duty costs. However, after deciding not to sell the car, Amankwah informed Pastor Love that he would return to Ghana in April 2017 to collect it.
When Amankwah arrived, he discovered that Pastor Love could not produce the vehicle despite several demands.
Frustrated, Amankwah reported the matter to the East Legon Police Station on May 25, 2017, leading to Pastor Love’s arrest.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that confirmed the pastor’s guilt, culminating in his conviction.
