Ghana has long been celebrated for its stable democracy, often standing as a beacon of hope in a region where political turmoil is not uncommon.
Over the years, the country has earned praise for peaceful transitions of power, a functioning parliament, and a judiciary that largely upholds the rule of law.
However, recent events in Parliament have cast a shadow over this hard-earned reputation.
The Appointments Committee of Parliament was forced to relocate its vetting session after Thursday’s proceedings took a dramatic and violent turn.
What was meant to be a routine vetting exercise descended into chaos as Members of Parliament clashed, leading to the destruction of tables and microphones.

The scene, which played out before cameras and stunned onlookers, left many questioning whether Ghana’s political leadership is upholding the very democracy it claims to champion.
Addressing the media after the incident, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga expressed his disappointment at the turn of events. He reiterated the need for MPs to conduct themselves with decorum and warned against actions that could tarnish Ghana’s international standing.
“Ghana has one of the most beautiful and functioning democracies. The Ghanaian Parliament remains the envy of many parliaments.
“We’ve had an election that was so beautiful—the losing side conceded, and the whole world saw it. Let us not destroy that enviable image we have carved for ourselves,” Ayariga stated firmly.
