Private legal practitioner Andrew Appiah-Danquah has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to grant a pardon to William Ato Essien, the jailed founder of the defunct Capital Bank.
“The Reset Agenda that the president promised, which has received overwhelming endorsement from Ghanaians, will not be complete unless it leads to the total reset of all acts of injustice perpetrated under the erstwhile regime,” Appiah-Danquah argued.
According to him, the greatest injustice was the persecution of Ato Essien and the unlawful collapse of Capital Bank.

It will be recalled that the Bank of Ghana revoked the bank’s license on August 14, 2017, citing insolvency.
Ato Essien was later convicted on multiple counts of stealing and money laundering and handed a total jail term of 95 years, to run concurrently, meaning he is to serve 15 years behind bars.
Although he reached an agreement to refund GHC90 million, he was only able to pay GHC37 million, leading to his custodial sentence.
