The red carpet has been a fixture of the Academy Awards for more than six decades. On Wednesday, the Academy unveiled a brand-new champagne-colored carpet outside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood for this year’s Oscar ceremony.
The alteration was made by design consultants Lisa Love and Ral Vila, who experimented with hues such as sienna and saffron to “evoke the sunset” before settling on the light beige color that complements the champagne pouring during the awards ceremony.
Jimmy Kimmel, who will host the 95th Oscars on Sunday, presided over the unveiling of the new carpet. Kimmel remarked that the producers’ decision to switch from red to champagne demonstrates their confidence “that no blood will be shed” this year.
Bill Kramer, chief executive officer of the academy, stated that the arrivals line will have a more “luxe” appearance with red drapes on all sides and a champagne-colored carpet. Lisa Love, a longtime contributor to Vogue, and Ralf Vila, the creative director for the glamorous Met Gala in New York, conceived the idea. “We chose this beautiful sienna and saffron color that evokes the sunset, because this is the sunset before the golden hour,” Love told the AP
Fans of the awards show have noticed the shift, with some expressing dismay at the absence of the iconic red carpet.
But, creative director Love believes that it would be perceived as a lightness by the public. “Somebody’s always got a way to find something wrong with something,” creative director Love said. “This is just a lightness, and hopefully people like it.” It doesn’t mean that it’s always going to be a champagne-colored carpet.
This switch comes in the wake of the Academy engaging a “Crisis Team” to prepare for any potential incident such as the infamous Will Smith and Chris Rock slap.
The 2023 Oscars will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 12 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
