Okyeame Kwame’s spiritual journey has taken a significant turn, as the celebrated rapper opens up about his decision to step away from traditional religion.
Kwame explained how his growing interest in free thought led him to critically examine the role religion has played in African history and in his own life in a recent appearance on DJ Slim’s Loud Lounge podcast.
The veteran artist doesn’t mince words when discussing his disillusionment with religion, especially after learning about its colonial roots.
“When religion came to us, it wasn’t to teach us about God—it was a tool of control,” Kwame asserted. “It was never about uplifting us; it was about exploiting us, and once you realize that, it changes everything.”

Drawing from his own research, Kwame pointed to a letter written by Leopold II of Belgium to missionaries in the Congo, which, according to him, advised the missionaries to use religion to subjugate the local population and make resource exploitation easier.
“They told the missionaries to weaken the minds of the people, and religion was the means to do it,” Kwame said, visibly upset.
“It’s hard to see religion the same way once you understand it as a tool of mental enslavement.”
His growing disillusionment led Kwame to a deeper exploration of spirituality, where he began to question the teachings and practices that had been handed down to him. “I’m an omnist now,” he revealed.
“I’ve come to understand that all religions have valuable lessons. I don’t subscribe to one particular system, but I do believe in learning from all of them and finding what aligns with my truth.”
