Rising Ghanaian musician Safo Newman has shed light on the challenges he’s faced as his star continues to rise.
During a revealing conversation on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, the artist opened up about the pressures to conform to industry expectations and his unwavering commitment to staying true to himself.
Safo, celebrated for soulful tracks like Akokoa, Miss Issabela, and Sorrow Fly, disclosed that some individuals have suggested he use illegal substances to boost his confidence and energy levels for live performances.
Firmly rejecting the idea, he said, “That’s not something I could ever do. It doesn’t align with who I am.” He emphasized his belief in authenticity, choosing to rely on his natural persona rather than artificial enhancements to connect with his audience.
The calm and understated approach Safo brings to his performances has often been misunderstood.

As someone with an introverted personality, his stage demeanour reflects his true self, a fact he believes some critics fail to appreciate.
“Not every performer needs to be wild or overly energetic,” he explained. “People have different personalities, and mine is more reserved. What matters most to me is being genuine.”
Criticism has also extended to Safo’s fashion sense, with detractors suggesting he doesn’t prioritize his visual presentation.
Combined with comments about his stage presence, these critiques have created a unique set of challenges for the musician.
However, Safo takes it all in stride. “I hear the feedback, and while I’m open to improving, I don’t see the need to change my core identity just to please others,” he shared.
