The Fugees have reunited for what may be their final performance ever, thanks to Lauryn Hill. On June 3, Questlove attended the Roots Picnic and recorded the once-in-a-lifetime reunion on camera.

“What A Night. In 1993 an unknown band called the Fugees (at the request of the record label i interned at @ruffhouserecords) opened up for us at #TheTrocodero in Philadelphia—-this was one of their first gigs since signing to a major label,” he began. “They were there to help us celebrate our signing to @geffenrecords. Their #BluntedOnReality got released in early 93. We got our deal in Dec 93 & man…”

He continued: “Now 30 years later & look at us now. What a journey. @MsLaurynHill did us a solid by letting us not only letting us celebrate with her the classic #MiseducationOfLaurynHill but she also made a moment by bringing together her bredren @WyclefJean & @PrasMichel ……in what could possibly be one of the last times we will see this institution together in this setting.”

J. Period, the tour DJ for Black Thought, was also in attendance and took a video from a different angle. Check them both out below.

Word of a potential Fugees reunion tour had started to circulate back in September 2022, but the tour was finally cancelled when Pras was charged with federal money laundering. The Grammy Award-winning MC’s legal issues prevented the tour from going on. Last year, the storied Hip Hop duo had just one performance in New York City before calling it quits.

About the Fugees

The Fugees is an American hip-hop group formed in 1990 in South Orange, New Jersey. Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel, and Lauryn Hill make up the trio whose name is a contraction of the term “refugees”.

The group became well-known in the middle of the 1990s for their innovative fusion of reggae, R&B, funk, and hip-hop that shunned gangsta rap and elevated them to the status of one of the most important alternative hip-hop acts.

Along with The Roots, they were one of the first hip-hop groups to use live instruments, and they occasionally rapped in Haitian Creole.’Two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award for International Group have each been won by the group collectively.

The Fugees were ranked 17th out of the “50 Greatest Hip-Hop Artists” on VH1. They are among the best-selling hip-hop acts of all time, and in the 1990s, they were the second-biggest R&B act in the world, behind Michael Jackson.

Rolling Stone listed The Score as one of the 500 Greatest Albums. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named “Ready or Not” one of the Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
