During a recent engagement with members of the Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring the passage of the LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana.
“Parliament is the authority on passing laws, not any other person, not the president,” Bagbin stated, pointing to what he deemed a procedural oversight when former President Nana Akufo-Addo failed to assent to the bill.
“He was wrong, and all of you together punished him for that,” he remarked, referencing public dissatisfaction over the inaction.

Bagbin’s words carried a mix of conviction and urgency. Speaking about his personal motivations, he made an emotional declaration: “Nobody should joke with me when it comes to that area. I can lose my life because of that.
“It is better not to live than to live in a society where man to man, woman to woman, what is that?” His stance highlighted a deeply personal and moral perspective, reflecting broader societal debates in Ghana over the bill.
For Bagbin, the matter is clear. “I’m determined to see this through quickly, hoping for passage this year,” he stated. “To me, it’s a matter of upholding moral principles, and I’m willing to take a strong stance, even if it comes at great personal cost.”
