Former Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Ken Thompson, has challenged the common perception that governments are responsible for job creation, stating that such an idea is flawed.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Thompson emphasized that job opportunities stem from a thriving economy driven by private sector growth rather than government intervention.
“We must be clear in our minds that it is not the government that creates jobs. No government anywhere creates jobs,” he asserted, urging young Ghanaians to rethink their expectations regarding employment.
Thompson also expressed concern over the aspirations of some young people, citing their preference for government jobs as a reflection of the country’s economic struggles.
“What even breaks my heart is that a lot of young people, when you ask them where they want to work, some of them say, ‘I want to work in the Bank of Ghana.’
“Then you know it’s a problem. Ghana, it is a problem. You go to some of these institutions, some of them don’t even have desks to sit on,” he lamented.
While acknowledging that the situation is not entirely the fault of young job seekers, he pointed to the harsh economic realities making it difficult for Ghanaians to secure meaningful employment.
“First, it is not the young people’s fault. Ghana is really in a difficult place to survive,” he added.
