NJ Mayor Faces Backlash After DUI Arrest with Toddler in Car

Lumberton Township Mayor Gina LaPlaca is at the center of controversy after newly released bodycam footage showed her allegedly intoxicated during a DUI arrest.

Authorities say she had just picked up her two-year-old son from daycare when she was stopped on March 17, following reports of erratic driving.

The footage, which has since gone viral, captures LaPlaca removing her child from the car seat before appearing to lose her balance. Officers on the scene questioned her, at which point she admitted to consuming vodka earlier that day.

A search of her vehicle reportedly revealed a water bottle filled with alcohol and a small liquor bottle.

Field sobriety tests were conducted, and the mayor visibly struggled to maintain her composure, stumbling at times.

She was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, child endangerment, and operating a vehicle with an expired license.

Following the incident, LaPlaca’s husband revealed that she has entered an inpatient treatment program to address her struggles with alcohol.

Meanwhile, public opinion in Lumberton Township has been divided. Some residents, along with a township committee member, have called for her resignation. However, legal experts note that the committee does not have the power to remove her from office.
