This year’s Brit Awards has recognized three Nigerian Afrobeats superstars, Burna Boy, Asake, and Rema making the list of the prestigious awards.

Rema’s track ‘Calm Down’ has been nominated in the coveted International Song of the Year category, while Burna Boy and Asake have been nominated in the star-studded International Artist of the Year category.

In the International Artist of the Year category, Burna Boy and Asake will be competing against renowned international superstars such as Miley Cyrus, SZA, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Lanarkshire Del Rey, CMAT, and Caroline Polachek.

Meanwhile, in the International Song of the Year competition, Rema’s “Calm Down” will be up against other global hits like Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red,” Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers,” SZA’s “Kill Bill,” Libianca’s “People,” a song by a Cameroonian diva, and Tyla’s “Water” from South Africa.

Raye has received a remarkable seven nominations, making her the leading contender for the 2024 Brit Awards. This achievement marks the first time an artist has received seven nominations in a single year.

The Brit Awards 2024 will be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

The BRIT Awards, organized by the British Phonographic Industry, is an annual music awards ceremony in the UK. Originally named after “British”, “Britain”, or “Britannia”, it later became a backronym for British Record Industry Trusts Show.

The Classic BRIT Awards, a similar ceremony for classical music, is held in May. The BRIT Awards began in 1977 and became an annual event in 1982 under the BPI. In 1989, they were renamed The BRIT Awards and have been sponsored by Mastercard for a long time.

Known as the most prestigious music awards ceremony in the UK, the BRIT Awards have witnessed significant moments in British popular culture.

These include Freddie Mercury’s final public appearance, Jarvis Cocker’s protest against Michael Jackson, the feud between Oasis and Blur, Geri Halliwell’s Union Jack dress, and a Chumbawamba member throwing water over Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. In the 1990s, the ceremony had a reputation for being unpredictable and anarchic, but it has since evolved into a more polished and controlled event.

Until 1989, the BRIT Awards were broadcast live, but a poorly received show led to a change in format. From 1990 to 2006, the event was recorded and broadcast the following night.

However, since 2007, the BRIT Awards have returned to a live broadcast on British television, taking place on February 14 on ITV. In 2010, the ceremony was held for the last time at Earls Court in London.
