Renowned Hip-life musician and the owner of the NK City Nightclub, Nhyiraba Kojo, claims his two weeks behind bars had improved the lives of his other inmates.
The Sekondi Commercial High Court found him guilty of contempt and handed him a fine after some Fijai locals brought him to court for causing noise pollution in his Takoradi nightclub, NK City.
In an interview with ZionFelix, Nhyiraba explained the background of the dispute that eventually ended up in court.
The famous artist and businessman only spent two weeks in jail, despite widespread reports that he would be there for 30. After learning that he had responded to their request to address the noise pollution, the court, he claims, issued an order for his release.
The owner of the NK City Night Club considers his time behind bars to be a gift to the other detainees. One of the problems he saw at the prison was a lack of clean water. He mentioned that convicts often had to buy “pure water” to use in their showers.
Nhyiraba Kojo disclosed that he assisted in providing access to water for the inmates, for which he has received praise from prison officials.
He stated that Kofi Kinaata supported him when he visited him in jail. On April 28, 2023, the Sekondi Commercial High Court found prominent Hip-life artist and NK City Nightclub owner Nhyiraba Kojo guilty of contempt of court.
According to reports, three Fijai locals filed the lawsuit because the club’s loud music bothered them. Nhyiraba Kojo was found guilty of disobedience and sentenced because he ignored a court order.
Environmental officials in Ghana have often cautioned residents and businesses to lessen the negative effects of noise pollution on their neighbourhoods, but these warnings have occasionally been ignored.
