The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande has raised some intriguing questions about the presidency under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Gbande’s comments focused on practices he found questionable, such as the former president’s habit of carrying his own chair during travels and the current arrangements for President John Mahama’s office.
“Why did Akufo-Addo carry his own chair along when traveling?” Gbande asked, clearly puzzled by the practice.
“You don’t think the nation should interrogate why a president moves with his seat?” He further questioned the symbolism of the chair, asking, “You want the incoming president to go and sit on the seat that was being moved around and having its own designated vehicle?”
This line of questioning seemed to stem from a sense of scepticism regarding the practices and customs established during Akufo-Addo’s presidency.
For many, the notion of a president traveling with a personal seat might seem unusual, but for Gbande, it raised deeper questions about the symbolism and impact of such actions.
He pointed out the importance of resetting the country’s political environment, emphasizing that the incoming administration must address the legacy left by the outgoing government. In the same breath, Gbande discussed the shift in office arrangements for President John Mahama.
“We are now putting measures in place to designate the necessary offices,” Gbande revealed.
“It is all resetting, and so I don’t think it is out of place that President Mahama is not operating from the Jubilee House.”
