Rema has expressed that his impact on the Afrobeats genre has established a distinct presence for it in the realm of international awards.
During an interview with “The Breakfast Club,” the artist indicated that his music has helped to form an Afrobeat category on the global stage.
He emphasized that he is not seeking to boast about his achievements, but rather, since his predecessors have not acknowledged it, he feels compelled to highlight his own contributions.
“I don’t want to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself,” he said.
“Respect to the OGs but yeah, I am one of the Big 4… Something as little as a major award shows creating an Afrobeats category because the success of my song has already opened gates.”
Rema shared insights into the motivation for his album HEIS. The artist, who recently celebrated a significant achievement with Afrobeats’ first 1 billion streams on Spotify, mentioned his intention to craft a sound that diverges from the dominant trends in Nigerian mainstream pop music.
He articulated a wish to surpass expectations and push against traditional boundaries.
He said:
“I like the way I moved on to my new project. I don’t like to move the way people expect. I don’t like to move with the rules”.
