Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter Amaarae, known for her genre-defying music, recently shared her views on the limitations of musical genres during an interview on News Live Prime on ABC.
Currently on tour with pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter, Amaarae took the opportunity to reflect on her artistic journey, speaking candidly about how her love for music transcends the traditional boundaries of musical categories.
“Genres can be so limiting,” she remarked during the interview. “Once you love music, you want to be able to express it in any way possible.”
This statement captures the very essence of Amaarae’s creative philosophy. She is widely celebrated for blending various musical influences, from R&B and Afrobeats to alternative pop and electronic music.
Amaarae’s sound does not fit into a single category, which has become one of her strengths in an industry where artists are often pressured to conform to specific labels or styles.
Born Ama Serwah Genfi, Amaarae’s journey into the music world started in Accra, Ghana, but it was in her dual cultural heritage that she found the freedom to explore different sounds.
Her music is infused with African rhythms while embracing global trends, something she credits to her exposure to diverse music growing up.

From a young age, Amaarae gravitated towards music that allowed her to express her individuality. This personal connection to her craft has only deepened as she has matured, both as an artist and as a woman of Ghanaian descent navigating the global music scene.
What sets Amaarae apart from many of her peers is her ability to not only experiment with sound but to break down barriers between genres and cultures.
In her debut album The Angel You Don’t Know (2020), she delivered a mix of alté vibes, blending sultry vocals with energetic beats and unpredictable production.
The album brought her widespread recognition, not just in Ghana but across the world. Her track “Sad Girlz Luv Money” became viral, sparking numerous remixes and securing her place in the global music conversation.
Throughout her career, Amaarae has made it clear that she is not interested in being boxed in by the expectations of a single genre or audience.
Her appearance on News Live Prime further reinforces this ethos, as she emphasized the importance of allowing artists the freedom to express their artistry without being limited by industry conventions.
