In the 2024 edition of the Hennessy Cypher, Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie skillfully incorporated lyrics that shed light on the exploitation of musicians by record labels.
He emphasized that many artists in Ghana have unfortunately become victims of unscrupulous record label owners, resulting in being locked up in cages.
Sarkodie shared his personal experience of evading a similar fate by recounting an incident where he was handed a daunting 1000-page document to sign.
However, determined to have his freedom, he said he did not sign.
“I did this thing myself I never messed with Majors. They gave me documents like 1000 pages. I want my freedom because most of my homies are locked in cages.
“I taught you how to do this thing the right way, they smile with you but rob you in broad day,” he said in the song that has ignited entertainment news in Ghana.
Sarkodie further discussed the necessity of communicating with others to connect with his peers, mentioning that they now divide the publishing even before completing the song, a practice that was not common in the past.
His words; “African music couldn’t cross but as soon as we signed papers labels opened their doors. Now I see how you all really move because that is the same thing fraud people do”
