In a discussion on the In My Opinion podcast, Nigerian rapper Phyno shed light on the intense demands of a music career, emphasizing how its all-consuming nature can affect life decisions, including marriage and education.
The indegenous rapper shared his perspective on why some musicians struggle to sustain their careers after tying the knot.
“Music basically is a jealous career,” Phyno began, drawing a parallel between the dedication required for success in music and the sacrifices it often demands.
“That’s why people drop out of school to face music. The ones that had to juggle the two, you have to give them kudos because it’s not easy.”

He highlighted how challenging it is to balance the rigorous demands of education and a burgeoning music career, adding that only a few manage to excel at both.
Phyno explained that some artists who pause their education to focus on music later return to school once they’ve achieved a certain level of fame.
“Sometimes, some people get to a certain fame level and rush back to school and come back to continue from where they stopped because you have to actually face one. Music is tasking; it takes all your time,” he said.
Delving into the emotional aspect of music creation, the rapper noted that the art often draws directly from personal experiences.
“Another thing about music is that it is what you pass through that you put into it—life experiences—except if you use songwriters.
“But if you write your songs, you can’t be talking about happiness when you’ve got a girlfriend that’s stressing you,” he said, illustrating how life’s ups and downs shape an artist’s work.
