The much-anticipated Black Star Festival, a new celebration of Ghanaian creativity, culture, and heritage, has been postponed to October 25 and 26 in Washington, D.C.

Originally scheduled for September 26–28, organisers GD Visionary Group announced the new dates to allow time to address “important matters arising” and ensure the event meets the highest standards.

“GD Visionary Group remains committed to upholding the highest standards of excellence and integrity for the festival,” a statement from the organisers said.
“With this adjustment, the Black Star Festival is positioned to deliver its intended impact as a flagship platform for Ghanaian heritage, cultural diplomacy, and Pan-African unity.”

The festival forms part of President John Mahama’s Black Star Experience, an ambitious initiative aimed at showcasing Ghana’s cultural wealth and creative industries to the global diaspora.

Officially launched on June 17, 2025, at the Accra Tourist Information Centre (ATIC), the Black Star Festival drew participation from leading figures in Ghana’s arts and culture scene, including the Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture (NCC) and other key industry stakeholders.

The Black Star Experience builds on Ghana’s earlier cultural milestones such as the Year of Return and Beyond the Return initiatives. It seeks to position Ghana as Africa’s cultural and creative hub, with year-round programmes spanning art exhibitions, music and film festivals, fashion showcases, culinary events, and heritage conservation projects.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Wakefield Ackuaku, Executive Director of the NCC, described the initiative as a continuation of Ghana’s cultural journey:

“The Black Star Experience aims to build on the momentum generated by previous initiatives, propelling Ghana’s cultural identity into the future. The Black Star Festival is one of the projects designed to push Ghana’s cultural agenda forward.”

The festival itself promises a rich blend of music, art, fashion, film, and business networking, spotlighting both Ghanaian and African excellence. Activities will include street carnivals, film screenings, fashion shows, food fairs, theatrical performances, and a grand gala night.

Among the acclaimed artists expected to feature are Ibrahim Mahama, Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, Betty Acquah, Samuel Lovi, and Serge Attukwei Clottey.

Organisers say the brief postponement will allow them to deliver an unforgettable cultural experience that truly reflects Ghana’s creative spirit and Pan-African pride.
