President John Dramani Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in his second term was met with strong criticism from former Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Asare, who accused him of painting a picture of economic doom while making populist promises without a clear funding strategy.

During his address on February 27, 2025, Mahama described Ghana’s economy as being in an “intensive care unit” and pledged to restore stability through various interventions.
However, Osei Asare found contradictions in his approach, questioning how he intended to finance his proposed policies.
“It is ironic that, on the one hand, the President describes the economy as being in an intensive care unit, yet, on the other hand, he is pushing for massive new social intervention programs without indicating how they will be financed,” she argued.
