President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
This decision, made in consultation with the Council of State, comes in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution.
COP Yohunu takes over from Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who has been at the helm of the Ghana Police Service. The newly appointed IGP brings four decades of experience in law enforcement and is expected to lead efforts toward the modernization and transformation of the service.
A statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, confirmed the appointment.
This development comes at a time when the authority of the President to dismiss heads of security agencies is being legally contested. Policy think tank IMANI Africa and security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning have filed an injunction at the Supreme Court to challenge such dismissals.
As COP Yohunu assumes office, the country awaits further reactions from stakeholders, especially within the security sector, regarding this major change in leadership.
