President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka as the Acting National Security Minister, entrusting him with additional responsibilities to oversee national security operations.
The decision, made under Section 24 of the Securities and Intelligence Act 2020 (Act 1030), was formally communicated to Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin during proceedings on Friday, March 7, 2025.
Muntaka is now tasked with managing national security alongside his Interior Ministry duties as the government seeks to tackle emerging security threats and strengthen public safety.

By merging the roles of the Interior Minister and National Security Minister, President Mahama aims to improve coordination and operational efficiency within the country’s security apparatus.
This move aligns with Mahama’s broader restructuring efforts, which saw the dissolution of several ministries upon assuming office.
Among the affected ministries were the Ministry for National Security, the Ministry of Information, and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources—all part of his pledge to streamline governance and promote efficiency.
