Serena Williams made a surprise appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show, dancing reminiscent of her 2012 Olympic celebration.
She later shared on social media how this collaboration came about.
In her post, Williams explained: “When @kendricklamar and team called and was like ‘we’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this?
“We loved your Crip Walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal.’ I’m like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would … Super Bowl? (Never) let’s do … ! I knew my winning dance after the … .”

This collaboration not only highlighted her connection to Lamar through their shared Compton roots but also revisited a significant moment from her career.
Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, also addressed the performance on X (formerly Twitter), defending Serena’s participation by referencing past criticism she received for the same dance.
“Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows…. This is bigger than the music,” he wrote.
Williams’ performance was widely discussed, with some interpreting it as a nod to her past and others speculating about its significance.
Regardless, her appearance added a memorable moment to the Super Bowl halftime show.
