Ghana’s music industry has long been a vibrant tapestry of sounds, from the soulful rhythms of Highlife to the fiery energy of Dancehall.
Yet, the idea of promoting a single genre as the defining sound of Ghanaian music has sparked debate over the years.
Stonebwoy, one of the nation’s most celebrated artists, has joined the conversation, offering a compelling argument for diversity over uniformity. Speaking on Hitz FM, Stonebwoy dismissed the notion that Ghana’s global music identity should hinge on one genre.
“I do not believe in that at all. Even if I used to, I don’t anymore. The idea of having one genre to push Ghanaian music is unrealistic. We need everyone,” he explained with conviction.
For him, the richness of Ghana’s cultural heritage is reflected in its wide array of musical styles, each with its unique contribution to the industry.
Stonebwoy went further to highlight the tangible benefits of this diversity, particularly the economic impact of Dancehall, a genre he has championed for years.
“Dancehall has put money in the pockets of hotels and airlines that bring foreigners to the country. It pays people to work during that week and creates numerous job opportunities,” he noted.
A country blessed with a rich cultural heritage should be allowed to express it in diverse ways,” he added, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and collaboration within the industry.
