The ‘Man Insane’ Kwaw Kese was recently interviewed by Nana Romeo on Accra FM and he made some interesting comments about Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) in relation to their job description.
A few days ago, the Interim Chairman of GHAMRO, Rex Omar told Ghanaian journalist, Kwame Dadzie that the Kwaw has about ₵13,000 cedis sitting in their black box. The veteran musician further said the mainstream rhymer will be paid if he gives them his details.
This was preceded by an angry rant by the rapper who has been in the industry for two decades. He tweeted; “20 years of doing music in Ghana and I’ve never gotten paid any royalties,” he tweeted.
He also used the moment to harshly criticized the inverted norms of the local scene, where performers must instead pay the media to promote their work.
In this new development, however, Kwaw Kese told Nana Romeo that he has received the money in the form of a cheque.
He said although he was initially mad that he was receiving such a paltry sum for his hard work after all these years in the industry, the explanation given by the hierarchy of the agency explains that the system is faulty so he’s cool with them in the meantime.
He however added that if the cheque they have given him bounces, he will go to the office and raze down the entire building.
Ghana Music Rights Organization is a royalties collection agency within Ghana, that represents the rights of music copyright holders. It was created under section 49 of the Copyright Law, Act 690 of 2005. The agency collects royalties for all rights owners in Ghana.
