Singer Kwabena Kwabena has said he has nothing to say about Kuame Eugene being named the King of Highlife by Amakye Dede at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) a few years back.
According to him, having been in the music industry for more than two decades, he is more focused on creating quality music for his fans rather than concerning himself with mainstream trends.
While he praised Kuame Eugene’s talent, he preferred not to discuss the topic of him being crowned Gien that accolade that surprised players and stakeholders of the music industry.
Kwabena Kwabena made these comments during a recent interview on Hitz FM.
“As a matter of fact, I didn’t have any issue with what the legend Amakye Dede did and with time he has come to speak to what actually transpired and everything that happened around the whole ceremony.
And for me, I am an artiste, I enjoy music. I don’t care about who is king or who is queen or who is a linguist. I only care about the art and its beauty.
“Kwame Eugene is a fine artiste and he has done some really great pieces out there. He is exciting and all of that. I can’t have a problems with the fact that Nana Amakye decided to crown him. I don’t have a problem with that,” he said.
In 2019, during the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), which is now known as the TGMAs, a surprising incident unfolded on stage.
Amakye Dede appeared with a crown and ceremoniously asked Kuame Eugene, who was performing at the time, to kneel and accept his kingship. This happened after the youngster won the Highlife Artiste of the Year award.
He declared Kuame Eugene as the new King of Highlife, stating that other artists in the same genre would have to come under him.
This incident generated a lot of buzz on social media and sparked various conversations on entertainment news platforms.
However, in 2023, Amakye Dede revealed that he was not acting of his own will when he crowned Kuame Eugene, but was actually forced to do so.
“Although I did that [crowned him], it was not my will to do that but they forced me to crown the boy. That’s the reason I did that,” he said.
“Even the crown they gave to me to put on his head, I gave it to someone to place it somewhere. But later, they gave it back to me to adorn him with it,” Amakye Dede further stated in the interview.
