‘Kivo Gari’ Dancehall-Magical Settings’ Fiery Comments Target Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Others

Magical Settings, a fast-emerging name in Ghana’s Dancehall scene, has sparked a wave of debate with his recent interview on Hitz FM with DJ Slim.

The young artist’s appearance, monitored by GhanaStreetJournal, has left listeners pondering the very essence of Dancehall and where Ghanaian artists stand about this Jamaican-born genre.

Speaking in Patois, Settings boldly asserted himself as Ghana’s only “true” Dancehall artist—a declaration that ruffled many feathers in a community rich with talented musicians.

For Settings, authenticity in Dancehall isn’t simply about sound; it’s about upholding the genre’s Jamaican roots without compromising its core. Citing Vybz Kartel and Spice as his major influences, Settings sees these Jamaican icons as the epitome of Dancehall’s raw energy and cultural pulse.

However, when DJ Slim asked him to name a favourite local Dancehall act, Settings did not hesitate to criticize Ghana’s Dancehall artists, dismissing them as “inauthentic” and even accusing them of misleading the public with their approach to the genre.

He levelled specific critiques at well-known names like Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Epixode, and Jupitar, claiming that their music, though popular, lacks the genuine essence of Jamaican Dancehall.

These comments reached a provocative peak when he labelled Epixode a “Kivo Gari” artist—a term suggesting Epixode’s style, in Settings’ view, is a mix of genres rather than pure Dancehall.

This pointed remark highlights a debate that has simmered in Ghana’s music circles for some time: Should dancehall evolve with local influences, or should it remain true to its origins?

For Settings, blending genres undermines the authenticity of Dancehall’s powerful rhythm and message, but for many fans, this evolution represents the beauty of music adapting across cultures.

Dancehall’s journey from Jamaica to Ghana is a testament to the genre’s power to cross borders. Emerging from the streets of Jamaica in the late 1970s, Dancehall evolved out of reggae and became a global phenomenon.

The genre’s powerful, rhythmic sound and ability to capture gritty, unfiltered storytelling resonated across the world, especially in Ghana, where local artists found ways to make Dancehall their own.

Artists like Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy became household names by infusing Dancehall with Ghanaian languages, dialects, and rhythms, creating a unique, cross-cultural style that appealed to local and international audiences. Yet, for purists like Magical Settings, this fusion has watered down Dancehall’s authenticity, and he believes Ghanaian artists should make more effort to preserve its roots.

For fans, Settings’ comments reflect a cultural tension between tradition and innovation. His criticism of Ghanaian Dancehall artists, many of whom are considered pioneers, has put him at odds with both listeners and fellow artists.

DJ Slim’s questions about Settings’ influences tapped into a wider question of how deeply Ghanaian artists should connect with the Jamaican origins of the genre.

By identifying Vybz Kartel and Spice as role models, Settings positioned himself as a cultural purist, someone who views Dancehall as not just a musical style but a lifestyle that Ghanaian artists have yet to fully embrace.
