The Kantamanto market, a lifeline for countless traders, now lies in ruins after a devastating fire that swept through its stalls.
While traders struggle to cope with their losses, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has introduced a political dimension to the tragedy.
Speaking on Asempa FM, the Deputy Minister alleged that the fire was a calculated act with political undertones, tying the incident to Quaicoo, also known as Oboy, a polling agent for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Anybody who knows Kantamanto will tell you that these are people who live as one community,” Mr. Assafuah remarked, highlighting the unity that had long defined the market. However, he suggested that political tensions may have disrupted this harmony.
The Deputy Minister elaborated on Quaicoo’s recent personal struggles, which he said might have fueled his alleged involvement.
“This is a man whose wife divorced him a few weeks ago, and with no financial help from her, he has been depending on the generosity of some people at Kantamanto. But because of political machinations…” Mr. Assafuah implied.
His claims were further supported by an eyewitness account from a woman at the market, whose identity he chose to protect.
“A woman told me she saw this man passing through Kantamanto around 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Shortly after, the market was in flames,” he revealed.
According to Mr. Assafuah, this report aligns with corroborations from individuals familiar with Quaicoo’s movements.
“Based on her story and what I’ve heard from others close to him, I am convinced this was politically motivated,” he said.
