‘Jejereje’ Was Fantastic, But It Faded Quickly – Blakk Rasta Reflects on Stonebwoy’s Track

Reggae artist and radio personality Blakk Rasta recently shared his thoughts on the fleeting appeal of contemporary music, using Stonebwoy’s song Jejereje as an example.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, he expressed both his admiration for Stonebwoy and his concerns about how many modern tracks quickly lose their impact after release.

“With all due respect, Stonebwoy is my brother, and I love him. Jejereje was a great song that we all enjoyed when it was released,” Blakk Rasta began, acknowledging the immediate popularity of the track when it first dropped.

He recalled hearing the song while in Nkroful and being genuinely impressed by its sound and energy. “I remember being in Nkroful when it came out and thinking it was fantastic,” he added, pointing to the initial excitement surrounding Jejereje.

However, Blakk Rasta went on to share his disappointment in how quickly the song lost its momentum. “After just one week, Jejereje lost its appeal,” he remarked, reflecting on how the initial buzz faded rapidly. While he emphasized his personal enjoyment of the track, he also noted that its short-lived impact was indicative of a larger issue with contemporary music.

He then drew a comparison to the legendary South African reggae star Lucky Dube, whose music has remained relevant for decades. Blakk Rasta recalled Dube’s philosophy on creating music, highlighting a crucial distinction between making a hit and delivering a meaningful message.

“I recall Lucky Dube saying that he didn’t aim to create hits in the studio. Instead, he wanted to deliver a message through his music. If his songs became hits because people connected with the message, then that was a bonus,” Blakk Rasta shared.

This reflection led to Blakk Rasta’s critique of the modern music industry. He believes many artists today are too focused on following trends and crafting songs designed to be instant hits, rather than creating music with lasting value.

According to him, this approach is why many modern songs don’t stand the test of time. He suggested that musicians like Stonebwoy and others have the potential to create timeless music, but need to prioritize meaning and authenticity over chasing quick success.
