During a celebrity-studded wedding, Roxanne Wilshire and Gloria Carter, mother of American rap icon Jay Z, exchanged vows.

A-list celebrities such as Tyler Perry, Kelly Rowland, Tina Knowles, Corey Gamble, and ‘Good Morning America’ co-anchor Robin Roberts attended the wedding ceremony on Sunday at Tribeca 360° in Manhattan.

Attendees partied till the wee hours of July 3 on Monday as Jay-Z and his wife Beyoncé, who took a break from her “Renaissance Tour,” and their first child, Blue Ivy, were in the spotlight. Gloria Carter has served as an inspiration to the LGBTQ+ community ever since she came out as a lesbian in 2017 via Jay-Z’s song “Smile” off the album “4:44.”

She eventually agreed after Jay-Z allayed her concerns and contributed a poem she had written that was incorporated into the song.

In the song, Jay-Z established support for their matriarch stating: “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian/Had to hide in the closet, so she medicates/Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” he rapped.

“Cried tears of joy when you fell in love/Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her/I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”

Jay-Z noted revelation and proceeding events transformed the dynamics of their relationship and made their bond stronger.

Back in 2017, the rapper spoke about the subject on the D’USSE Friday podcast, saying his mom Gloria Carter has opened up about coming out to him. “I just finally started telling [Jay] who I was,” she said. “Besides your mother, this is the person that I am. This is the life that I live. So my son started actually tearing up. ‘Cause he’s like, ‘That had to be a horrible life, ma’. I was like, ‘My life was never horrible. It was just different.’ So that made him want to do a song about it.”

“I was never ashamed of me,” she added. “In my family, it was something that was never discussed… I’m tired of all the mystery. I’m gonna give it to ‘em. I don’t have to worry about anybody wondering if I’m in the life or not, I’m gonna tell them. So now that I told you, what do you have to talk about? So now maybe you can focus on the phenomenal things I do, so focus on that… Now it’s time for me to be free.”
